Dominique Charlet and Fabien Charuau, co-curators, offer their selection of 10 contemporary Indian photographers: Binu BHASKAR, Fabien CHARUAU, Neil CHOWDHURY, Pradeep DALAL, Dhruv DHAWAN, Soham GUPTA, Swapan PAREKH, Zubin PASTAKIA, Brijesh PATEL et Mahesh SHANTARAM.

This group show is our reading of what’s happening in Indian photography right now. It is an exercise in putting together photographers who get intimately engaged with their subjects, in a mirroring of how life in India engages all who live there. The artists presented here are linked together by their handling of reality and empathy for their subjects. This is a photographic approach where the artist probes reality as a fragment of a larger, complex whole. Far from recording what is perceived as real, this approach is a preoccupation with the twisting, the testing of so-called reality. It’s a vision shaped by a certain way of looking at the world that takes partial reality for granted. This Is Not That = what is true is hidden under layers of illusion. Around this same period, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will be an exhibition of contemporary Indian art.
